Marquez Wants No Excuses

As rumors gather pace about a casual, even cavalier approach by Manny Pacquiao to the hard grind of training to peak fitness for the fight of his life, his impending opponent WBA and IBF Champion Juan Manuel Marquez says that any last minute injury excuse from an under prepared Manny wouldn’t cut much ice.
While reports suggest Manny has yet to link up in the United States, with his trainer Freddie Roach and get down to some serious supervised gym work, Juan already has more than a month of hard work under his belt.
He’s already incorporating high altitude conditioning into his training program and will start sparring sessions next Wednesday.
As his manager Ignacio Beristain taped up his fists at the Gilberto Roman gym in Mexico City, Juan again expressed doubts whether Manny was still, or ever had been taking it easy, but he did say:
“A postponement isn’t possible. We have an obligation to television and to our fans to be in the ring and ready to fight. We must arrive there in top condition and any last minute protest about an injury, just would not be valid. I’m expecting this second fight will be a war, and I’m preparing accordingly.”

Marquez steps up purse demand

By Salven L. Lagumbay: Still seething at the thought of getting yet another small slice of the pie, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation featherweight king Juan Manuel Marquez yesterday renewed his diatribe at the promoters of the fight, saying that the i's wont be dotted and the t's will never be crossed unless his purse demand is met. Marquez, speaking through his manager-trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain during a lull in training at the Gilberto Roman Gym in Mexico City, informed once again that until now, they have not yet signed to fight Manny Pacquiao on February 26, and will not do so until Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and his Mexican contact Fernando Beltran give them what is due a dual champion.

Pacquiao leaves Jan. 6 for Marquez fight

FILIPINO ring sensation Manny Pacquiao is set to leave tomorrow, Jan. 6, for Los Angeles to resume his rigid training at the Wild Card Gym of famous American trainer Freddie Roach. Pacquiao, the Ring Magazine featherweight king, may be a little bit behind schedule in his training regimen but is confident he will be in peak form the moment he steps the ring on Feb. 26 to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time. Pacquiao, a native of General Santos City, even belittled Marquez and taunted the Mexican to train as hard as he could. Pacquiao and Marguez engaged in a classic battle last May. The Filipino dropped the Mexican three times in the first round, but Marquez came back strong in the next six rounds to settle for a draw. With the decision, Marquez kept his World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation featherweight titles. Pacquiao, although he failed to snatch the title, showed the world isn't afraid of an fighter and is willing to take on anybody who comes his way. The Filipino southpaw raised a lot of eyebrows when he, after beating Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera, decided to immediately face a tough opponent in Marquez. Joining Pacquiao in his flight will be Filipino trainer Buboy Fernandez. Roach had wanted Pacquiao to come as early as Dec. 26, but Pacquiao requested for a later date to enjoy the holidays, and to shoot a TV commercial. Roach likewise warned Pacquiao not to take Marquez lightly, specially since the Mexican went on an early regimen in the mountains of Mexico.

Pacquiao Assures He'll Be Ready For Marquez

Ring Magazine featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao arrived one day late for a scheduled shooting of a Darlington socks TV commercial but assured his countrymen “not to worry” because he will be ready for his February 26 rematch with WBA/IBF champion Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas, Nevada even as he stressed “I have no problems with my condition and you will see this on fight night.” Pacquiao lifted his long-sleeved t shirt to display his rippling abdominal muscles which quieted those who felt he was taking his preparation for the Marquez rematch too easily.
Pacquiao welcomed reports that Marquez had begun training as early as November and went through a rigorous workout even on Christmas Day because he was “going to need it.” Pacquiao boasted “if Marquez wants to go 15 rounds I’ll be ready” stating that “even with 6 to 7 weeks training,he's no problem. I can take him easily." Informed that Marquez was working on a strategy of how to avoid his devastating leftstraight with which he decked the Mexican three times in the first round in their controversial title fight last May, Pacquiao said “we have a surprise for him.”

Marquez warns: I'm going to win

STRAIGHT from his training camp in Mexico, Juan Manuel Marquez sent a New Year's message to Manny Pacquiao, a jolting one if you are a Pacman fanatic. Marquez, the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation featherweight champ, warned Pacquiao to be really prepared when they do it the second time on Feb. 26 in Las Vegas. "I'm working towards a condition which will give me the capability to fight at full capacity for the whole twelve rounds throwing meaningful punches from the very start to finish, because I think it's going to be a war, all over again, Marquez told the boxing web site www.boxingscene.com. "And it's going to be even better than our first fight. I'm going to be fully concentrating and fully physically prepared, he added. Marquez and Pacquiao fought to a bloody draw in their first meeting last year. Pacquiao floored Marquez three times in that bout but failed to finish off the Mexican. Marquez is reportedly ready for another battle with the Filipino sensation and has been training hard since November. "My message for Manny is exactly the same as last time, namely prepare well. Because I'm coming into this fight mentally and physically ready for a better fight than the first and I'm going to win, Marquez said. (CRAM)

A bark that’s equally bad as his bite?

Pacquiao belittles Marquez’s training regimen

Pacquiao belittles Marquez’s training regimen
By nick giongco
HAS SUCCESS gone into Manny Pacquiao’s head? That seems to be the case especially when you hear him disparage his Mexican rival, Juan Manuel Marquez, whose training regimen has made many Pacquiao fans worry about the Filipino’s chances when the two collide in an all important bout six weeks from now.
Told that Marquez has been training for their Feb. 26 rematch as early as late-November 2004, Pacquiao responded as though he would be just going up against a nightclub bouncer, and not against a fighter regarded as one of the most fundamentally sound today.

Marquez is Manny's toughest opponent

DURING his brief stay here in Davao City last November to train Manny Pacquiao, noted American trainer Freddie Roach was asked who among the three Mexican fighters--Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera--is the toughest foe for the Filipino ring warrior. Without batting an eyelash, Roach shot back: "Juan Manuel Marquez." Then a follow-up question was thrown: "Who is the easiest opponent among the three?" Again, Roach came up with a ready answer: "Marco Antonio Barrera." All those who have gathered around Roach at the oven-hot Davao City boxing gym while Pacquiao was shadowboxing atop the ring couldn't agree more. The fact that the famous trainer came all the way here from Los Angeles, and against the advise of his friends, underscored Roach's determination and seriousness to train Pacquiao for Marquez, the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association featherweight champion. Pacquiao was then training for his fight with Thai Fahsan 3K Battery of Thailand, whom he eventually crushed in just four rounds last December, but, as the Team Pacquiao declared, the pug was actually honing up his skills for Marquez. "Marquez is an intelligent fighter. He is better than Barrera and Morales," Roach said. The American went on to say that Barrera is the easiest target. Pacquiao dealt Barrera a severe beating in November 2003 to become the People's Champion. Barrera, however, was able to recover from that devastating defeat and dethrone Morales as World Boxing Council super featherweight titlist just recently. Pacquiao decked Marquez three times in the first round but couldn't finished him off to settle for a bloody draw the first time they met in May. Roach noted that Pacquiao relied too much on his left hand the first time around, the reason Marquez was able to survive the onslaught. To beat Marquez, Roach said Pacquiao has to develop his right hook the next time around. It was evident during the training here that Roach wants Pacquiao not only to unleash his right hook but also make it a devastating weapon in the Filipino pug's arsenal. In between rounds during the sparring sessions, Roach would always remind Pacquiao to fire the right hook and applauds everytime his ward connects one. Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Marquez in a rematch on February 26 in Las Vegas. "We can knockout Marquez if Manny uses both fists," Roach said.

Pacquiao/Marquez II Might Not Happen

It has been reported recently that the highly-anticipated rematch between world featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Juan Manuel Marquez might not happen. While both fighters have been training vigorously for what could be the best fight of 2005, it has leaked out that handlers of Marquez have threatened to pull out of the bout, scheduled for February 26 in Las Vegas. Team Marquez has allegedly turned down an offer of $750,000 and demands around $1.5 million for the fight. More on this turn of events as it unravels.
